CAP & TOWN EVENT

May 15th & 16th 2009

The Merced County Fair was among dozens of community organizations and businesses that participated in the Cap & Town event in Downtown Merced Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16.
The event celebrated graduations throughout the community including UC Merced, Merced Community College and area high schools. The two-day community celebration featured a long list of attractions including vendors selling everything from honey, T-shirts and jewelry to garden plants and kettle corn and there was live music and dancing demonstrations, bounce houses, a rock climbing wall, Wii games, street basketball, outdoor movies, a video arcade and a Guitar Hero contest.Folks downtown on Saturday afternoon witnessed First Lady Michelle Obama give the commencement speech to UC Merced's Class of 2009 thanks to a jumbotron at Bob Hart Square.  The Merced County Fair's display, located in front of the Merced Theater at Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, promoted the upcoming fair's theme "Catch The Buzz," a tribute to bees, one of the county's top ag products. The fair's booth included a "spin the wheel" bee trivia game with prizes for all participants, a display of beekeeping equipment and a live observation honey bee hive. Pure Valley Honey Bees of Le Grand sold several varieties of their honey at the  booth.
